Animal:

Note: The next morning we went to a different hide. Our plan was to wait for a zebra until noon. If nothing showed up, we would try a different method in the afternoon; the so-called walk and stalk. We sat without saying a word for about an hour. But we got lucky this time. Right away, a fine specimen of a blue wildebeest showed up. It was a beautiful and strong animal. It was grazing carelessly and all alone. It wouldn’thave been a problem to shoot it, but that was not our plan. Impalas kept creeping up all around us. The day looked promising. Suddenly, some waterbucks came out on the plain. The name of this animal in Slovak is quite unknown and it took me a while to find the right translation in the dictionary. The females were the first ones to come out. They were followed by two males. One was too young but the other one was a truly beautiful piece! Our original plan did not include hunting waterbuck but I was taken by this one. I knew right away I wanted it. Dirk looked at me and nodded. We took our time. Just to be sure, we double checked our distance from the antelope. Twenty meters. I got up carefully and picked up the bow. I put in an arrow and got the release ready. The distance was not too big and we also had plenty of time, so I decided to wait for the ideal position. The male was circling around the females and since I didn’t want to hurt them, I was waiting for him to move away a little. I knew where to aim and we did not expect any trouble. I picked up the bow, drew the bowstring toward the corner of the hide and aimed through the peephole. I locked the green pin on the sight on the animal’s front leg. I held my breath and I felt the adrenaline rising. I shot and the bow gently whistled through the air. The arrow hit the animal slightly off to the right from where I was aiming. About half of the arrow penetrated the animal. The waterbuck jerked and disappeared in the forest. I looked at Dirk with a question in my eyes and he looked at me. Something was not right. Little bit concerned, we sat down and started the traditional waiting ritual. We radioed for a truck with trackers, this time with tracking dogs, just to be sure. We didn’t know for sure if the arrow penetrated deep enough. Dirk loaded his gun and we climbed down. We found the tracks right away at the edge of the forest. We followed the bloody streaks for about one hundred and fifty meters, and then we found it. The animal’s impressive body was lying across the road. The arrow was still sticking out of the wound and when we pulled it out, its point was almost completely unscrewed.
